Tino Agustin De Guevara, PresidentTino De Guevara was born and raised in Santa Barbara. He attended local schools here in the city and went on to earn a Masters degree. Tino worked for the City of Fresno and later at San Jose University. After an absence of thirty years, Tino returned to his hometown to care for his ailing father and participate in local community activities. As well as his position as President of the Eastside Society, Tino is also a board member of the Sarah House Hospice. He is an avid adventurer, fisherman and writer.
Amie Mislang Kang, Treasurer
Amie Kang grew up on the East Side of Santa Barbara where she attended local schools. Amie and her late husband ran a Japanese sushi restaurant in Old Town Goleta before he passed from cancer at a young age. Amie continued to run the business for another five years whilst raising her two boys. Amie now runs Jacks Bagels bistro on Milpas Street where she’s been working since 2007.
Christopher Stocking, Secretary
Chris Stocking is a retired British news journalist who once worked for the television arm of the US news agency Associated Press in Washington DC. He now lives on the East Side and is studiously enjoying all the benefits of life in his chosen home town. As he puts it himself, “Santa Barbara is a paradise for me, and I’d like to help make it the same for everyone who lives and works here.”
Jose Arturo Gallegos, Sergeant at ArmsJose Arturo Gallegos is a long time fixture on the council circuit and a well known figure in the East Side community. Jose Arturo is an East Sider born and bred. He brings a wealth of local knowledge in his role as the Society’s Sergeant-at-Arms and specializes in keeping the Society up-to-date on council decisions affecting the neighborhood. If you want to know about planing decisions , housing issues or anything council related then Jose can be your first point of contact. And as someone who has been homeless, twice, Jose has a keen interest in homeless issues. He actively attends meetings of the full council and its key committees and his reports are a regular feature on this website.
Elizabeth "Zebby" Day, Board Member
Elizabeth “Zebby “ Day is a newcomer to Santa Barbara and the East Side. But that doesn’t mean she’s less committed to her new home town. She looks forward to helping the East Side Society achieve its objectives. Zebby works as a flight attendant and probably has the longest commute to work of anyone in Santa Barbara. She is based out of London, England. Zebby has previously acted as a volunteer helping AIDS patients and children with psychiatric issues.
Martha Jaimes, Board Member
Martha Jaimes is the soul of the East Side. She has tended to those in difficulty throughout her life. First, as a nurse at Cottage Hospital Critical Care Unit for 30 years, and then continuing at a paediatric practice on State Street. Martha is also an Elder in the Chumash community and has turned her skills to helping native youth as well. She remains committed to the East Side as a long term resident and now a member of the East Side Society management board.
Chuck Flacks, Board Member
Chuck Flacks brings a wealth of experience from a career spent tackling some of the most pressing issues facing California and Santa Barbara. Chuck is now at the forefront of the fight to tackle homelessness in the city. He is Director of Programs at Path Santa Barbara, a statewide non profit dedicated to ending homelessness.
His journey to Santa Barbara has also seen him develop programs for professionals in the health care sector and labor market , as well as work as a staff member for two California State Senators.
Maria Elena De Guevara, MA, CP, Board Member
Maria Elena De Guevara is the Director of Human Resources for the County for Santa Barbara. Her 34 year human resources career includes higher education, government and manufacturing. Maria Elena has a successful history of bringing strategic and innovative thinking to the varied leadership roles she has held. She is currently faculty with the Women’s Economic Venture of Santa Barbara.
Maria Elena received her Master’s Degree in HR and Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco and her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Santa Clara. Maria Elena has a strong history of volunteer board leadership: President-Western Region IPMA-HR, President-Western Region CUPA-HR, Vice President of San Jose Day Nursery and San Mateo County United Way Board Chair.
"We strive to make the Eastside a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment to live in. Our meetings are open to all residents and businesses who wish to augment the well-being of the community and celebrate cultural events. The Board meets on the third Monday of every month from 6-7:30 pm at the Eastside Branch Library, 1136 Montecito Street."
